What is it?

Humans in the Wild is a new Spring 2020 cohort program offering 10 entrepreneurs who are beginning to work on their next idea - what we call “humans in the wild” - an inspiring platform to create, incubate and develop their next big endeavor. The 100-day, no-equity program will provide entrepreneurs with a rich peer community, expert strategic advice, Human Ventures support services, and a collaborative office environment to help them incubate their new projects.

Why wellness?

Transformational changes in technology, consumer attitudes, and cultural values are driving profound shifts in behaviors around healthy lifestyles, fitness, nutrition, food/beverage, and mental health. We seek entrepreneurs who are passionate about bringing innovation and vision to these broad areas.

What you get

This program brings together 10 extraordinary individuals with deep entrepreneurial talent in our NYC Flatiron-district office, giving them the time, space and expert resources most needed at the company inception phase. Humans in the Wild will empower these entrepreneurs to develop and explore new business ideas, engage in customer discovery and market research, design their business plans and scope out product strategy. Some program participants may be eligible for pre-Seed investment from Human Ventures at the end of the program.

The commitment you’re making

The cost? Free. Equity split? None. We just ask for dedicated commitment to our program, deep support for your peer entrepreneurs, and engagement with our Venture team to assess potential fit for follow-on investment.

Who we are

Human Ventures is a NYC-based venture fund and startup studio. Our founder methodology pairs the very best community-focused entrepreneurs with a well-resourced, interconnected ecosystem that enables them to succeed.

FAQs

What type of applicant are you looking for?

We’re looking for extraordinary individuals who have demonstrated entrepreneurial and leadership experience. In some cases, this will mean second-time Founders, but we also want to support emerging leaders who have managed product development or business functions at high-growth startups, propelled dynamic functions at larger companies as an ‘intrapreneur,’ or built non-profit or other types of organizations from scratch in college or afterward.

We are keen to build a dynamic cohort for Humans in the Wild, composed of a rich mix of diverse professional and personal backgrounds and skill sets. We will include both technical and business-oriented Founders in our program.

We expect most program participants will be solo founders, but we are also open to co-founders who are exploring new company ideas together.
Human Ventures is committed to diversity and inclusion, which are values we apply to our application screening and within our team, portfolio and entrepreneur communities.

Do I need a specific idea or pitch to get into the program?

No. In fact, Humans in the Wild is designed for ‘zero stage’ entrepreneurs who are passionate about building something in the wellness space but at the beginning of their ideation journey. Participants may join the program with a dozen ideas they are trying to narrow down to a single focus, or with no specific ideas but with the goal of generating several to test and filter.

Applicants should be able to articulate ‘problem spaces’ within the wellness category that they are eager to solve - perhaps areas of unmet consumer demand, markets that need to be created and tech-enabled, or legacy services that need to be blown up and re-designed from scratch.

What will I get out of the Humans in the Wild program?

Human Ventures will offer a rich curriculum and set of experiences to make your 100-day journey enriching and productive, with the aim of empowering you to exit the program with single focus on a startup idea, along with a tested business and product plan.

Humans in the Wild will help you get there through 5 key program elements:

  • Rich peer community of fellow entrepreneurs as thought- and accountability-partners.

  • Access to Human Venture’s deep industry network, to help power recruiting, partnerships, mentoring and fundraising.

  • Participation with Human Venture’s corporate innovation partners, for learning and partnership opportunities, including a ‘reverse pitch’ event where Fortune500 companies present their innovation goals.

  • Free office space in New York City's Flatiron district.

  • Learning workshops, strategic mentoring, peer review critiques, and 1-1 professional coaching sessions led by a mix of Human Ventures team members, guest industry experts, and peers. Curriculum will cover ideation and business design, customer discovery, product strategy, self-discovery, and deep dives into industry dynamics of wellness/health. At a minimum, each week you’ll meet with your peer group for joint problem solving, a Human Ventures advisor for work-planning and strategic guidance, and attend a learning workshop led by HV staff or outside experts.

Given this wide set of programming, and the value we expect entrepreneurs to offer their peer group, we expect full-time engagement from our participants and your commitment to work onsite at the Human Ventures office in New York City’s Flatiron District for most of the Spring.

What happens after the program? Is investment funding available?

At the end of the program, we hope to offer a handful of participants pre-Seed investment of at least $250k to support the next stage of their journey. These entrepreneurs will also be invited to continue working out of the Human Ventures office beyond July 2nd, and to engage in deeper collaboration with our in-house business design, product design, talent and finance/administrative team resources. Accepting Human Ventures funding at the end of the program is not required.
